“In many ways Martin’s work relates to the Margaret Atwood manner of stock taking situations and people. But where Atwood’s frame of reference is Nature, Martin’s is in Victorian interiors. In this exhibition wallpaper patterns of clematis, roses and brocade act as stabilizers. They hold the figures in a social context and in the Dickson Series where slits appear in the wall paper, they become openings to personal freedom.”
